The art & craft of Bihar have been influenced by the different dynasties like Mauryan Empire, Gupta Empire, and Magadha as well as the ancient civilisations. The Madhubani Paintings from the Mithila region, mostly practised by women, portray religious symbols and scenes. Being the land of Gautam Buddha’s nirvana, Bihar is famous for its stone work. The Khatwa, an appliqué work of designing by cutting one fabric and stitching the pieces to another fabric is another craft used to decorate tents, canopies, shamianas and more. Papier Mache is used to create masks for different dance forms. Another beautiful art is the Sikki art made from the wild sikki grass, a riverside weed. The grass is handwoven into baskets and mats. Sujini is a traditional quilt embroidered in the rural areas. Tikuli is a form of art made from broken glass. The other well-known crafts of Bihar are wooden crafts, metal wares, lacquer works, rock paintings, pottery and jewellery.
